How to Get Your Crawfish Home From the Pickup Stop

The trip from our trailer to your house is where a good sack can turn into a bad one. A short ride in a hot, open truck bed can do more damage than a night in a cooler. Here's how to get them home in the same shape we hand them to you.

Before you leave the house

  • A cooler big enough to lay the sack flat. A full sack needs a large cooler. A half sack fits in a mid-size one.
  • Ice: a bag or two of ice, or a few frozen water jugs.
  • A second small cooler for frozen add-ons (shrimp, gator, sausage, boudin), if you ordered any.
  • Your pickup ticket: the order confirmation email. It has your stop, the meeting spot and an Open in Maps button.
  • Check your texts. We text you about 30 minutes before we arrive. Pickup windows are estimates that assume we stop at every stop on the route, so they can shift.

At the trailer

  • Set the sack flat in the cooler and lay the ice on top of the sack, not under it.
  • Leave the lid cracked open for air. Don't seal it.
  • Take a quick look. If something looks wrong, tell us before you leave.

On the road

  • Best spot: inside the cab with the AC on.
  • Truck bed only if it's covered and shaded. Never in an open bed in the sun. Sun, heat and wind dry them out fast.
  • Go straight home. Don't leave them in a closed, parked vehicle, not even for a quick stop. A closed car heats up in minutes.
  • Don't add water to the cooler for the ride. Sloshing water and a closed lid suffocate them.

Frozen add-ons

Shrimp, gator, sausage and boudin come frozen. Keep them in their own cooler with ice so they stay frozen, and put them in your freezer as soon as you get home.

Someone else picking up?

That's fine. Text us their name before pickup at (205) 441-3248, and send them this page so they bring a cooler.

Once you're home

Move the cooler to a shaded, cool spot, open the drain plug and keep the lid cracked. Then follow how to keep crawfish alive until the boil.
